The pinion housings of the finishing stands of a steel mill rolling mill were found to have heavy pounding of the bearing bores after many years of use. In an ongoing maintenance operation planned to take place over consecutive years, UED has project managed the refurbishment of each pinion housing from initial design through to manufacture and installation. The refurbishment process involves mesh-checking of the mill pinions on a special test rig, on-site machining of the pinion housing bores and the design, manufacture and installation of hardened-steel bearing cartridges. The bearing cartridges have eccentric bores so that the gear mesh measured on the test rig can be reproduced on site in the refurbished pinion housing. |
