| A steel bar mill was
experiencing wear and component failure of its furnace charger table due
to the steel billets, weighing more than a tonne each, falling over a
metre from the existing transfer arms on to the charger before being pushed
into the furnace.
Hydraulically operated transfer arms were designed by UED to smoothly carry the billets down from the transfer table to the charger table, with the arms then withdrawing below the level of the charger table to allow the pusher bogie to push the billets into the furnace. The subsequent improvement in operation and reduction in downtime enabled the second stage of the design to proceed later. The existing flat wear plates on the bed of the charger table were replaced by free-running rollers, designed by UED, a concept previously not considered due to the impact loads of the falling billets.
